Following our discussions in our PLC’s I wanted to share some ideas on why you should consider setting up a thinking classroom of your own. The goal is to build a physical space that is set up for procedures, modeling, discussions, routines, active listening strategies, and collaboration among peers. The research behind using comparison in the classroom comes from multiple meta-studies (Dean, Hubbell, Pitler, & Stone, 2012; Marzano, 2007: Marzano et aL, 2001) that demonstrate that the strategy leads to significant gains in student achievement. A main component to consider in the setting up process of your classroom is providing a space that is safe and inviting to all students. As educators we understand that all students learn at different paces and in different ways so by knowing this, we need to provide the scaffolding that a child may need over another. A fun strategy that I have implemented in my thinking classroom is having a timer on my smartboard while I am presenting a lesson. This is because I like to provide time for my students to think and reflect on what I am discussing. By doing this it helps to hold student engagement and gives them a chance to explore an idea that they may have on the topic. A thinking classroom allows for multi levels to communicate and collaborate with each other along with having the support of the classroom teacher to help guide and facilitate the activity at hand. These are just a few reasons as to why you should create a thinking classroom environment.
