There is a school in Schenectady N.Y. with a different name now, it is no longer called Martin Luther King school. That was the name of it when I went to school there in 1975. In the gymnasium, a name was painted on the wall, Kings wall. I grew up with Martin Luther King’s name instilled in me, and I grew up respecting his name. When I listened to and read his speech yesterday it reminded me of a special time. The world was more attentive of his accomplishments back then and his love for peace and unity. His voice alone was captivating it had a sense of urgency and hope. The school has a different name now I don’t know why or when it changed, but I was disappointed when I read about it. Martin Luther King talks about the Emancipation Proclamation, and how it gave a new sense of hope and equality to Negros for the future. They had hopes that their lives would change but alas they didn’t. Discouragement sets in when one hundred years later little had changed. In 1963 Martin Luther King rallied with other civil rights groups for equal jobs and freedom. At the rally for civil rights is where he gave his 17-minute famous “Have a dream speech,” arm in arm they marched in the nation’s capital. Yes, He was successful in getting his point across, his speech rang out through all of America and the world. The “I have a dream speech” were words that needed to be said, but no one was willing to profess them.
Racists and white supremacists needed to hear these words to understand that racism was not going to be tolerated. The Negro people had an advocate, the word was out for all to hear. From that moment on the treatment of the Negro race must be rectified and brought to justice. Martin Luther King wanted to do this with peace insistent that it could be done without anger or violence. By saying “I” he was in the first person, this shows the trustworthiness, and self-confidence he recognized in himself. The Negro people already looked up to him they already trusted him, in this way he had credibility on his side. At 6:01 pm on April 4, 1968, Martin Luther King stepped out on his balcony at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis Tennessee, and was fatally shot to death. He died at 7:05 in St. Josephs’s Hospital, and the world stood still mourning the death of a man who would go down in American history. He will be remembered as a clergyman, civil rights leader activist, peacekeeper, and friend to all. His presence in this world brought a whole new light to the Negro race because of Martin Luther King there is still strength and hope not just for people of color but for all who want to believe in a dream.
