Title: The one sentence that captures the entire paper
Abstract: One concise paragraph that captures the
essence of the paper. Will include key
research findings. Will not share the
first sentence with the Introduction section.
1. Introduction
The introduction
begins with a “bold” statement that expresses the motivation for the
paper. It could be a need or
requirement, or it may be a little dramatic to catch the reader’s attention
“Invasive species are the greatest risk to ecosystem health facing the world
today.” This sentence is normally not referenced. The remainder of this paragraph will guide
the reader through what motivates the study.
The first few sentences will be high level generalities with few
references. At the end of the first
paragraph, the authors will draw your attention to a key need followed by a few
references used to establish that this need is valid.
The second
paragraph builds from these high-level concepts and sets the discussion
framework by establishing that this is a viable thing that is being
researched. Expect to find many
references. It will follow a “funnel” logic
with broader concepts (say global issues) down to more focused concepts at the
end. This “funnel” is a multi-level
concept, it will flow within any single paragraph, but also within the
introduction section.
The third
paragraph is starting to get some focus and by the end of this paragraph we
have a much clearer idea where/what is done in a general sense (again, one step
down the funnel in the introduction).
The fourth
paragraph will bring the central idea (say, remote sensing is the answer to
your problem) into focus.
The final
paragraph of the introduction tells the reader what the point of the paper is
and where we’re going. In a research
paper, this would be the study objectives.
Review Area #1:
Start with the
largest/most important area. Again, use
the funnel technique within the section and within each paragraph.
Review Area #2 and so on.
Follow the same
pattern that you’ve already established.
These will be more detailed studies etc.
Conclusion:
Starts
with a one sentence review of what the paper was about. Then address the motivation (see first
sentence of the introduction) and then provides a short summary. This section refers to specific important
works and provides some details on those.
The real meat of the conclusions is in the last two paragraphs that
express where the field is headed or where the new research areas are
pointing. The last paragraph draws the
paper to a close by restating that what you set out to do (end of introduction)
you’ve done.
