This collection of three essays presents three accounts of deforested areas that, with various degrees
of human intervention, have been restored to forest.
 In “Greening the Desert” George Montbiot describes a “Cambrian desert” (4) in Wales that is
devoid of human and animal life. Then, he visits an area that, due to the simple measure of
fencing out sheep so they can’t eat the young trees, has in twenty years’ time developed into a
bird-filled forest (6).
 In “‘These Battered Hills’: Landscape and Memory at Verdun,” Paula Filipucci discusses an area
of France that a hundred years ago was annihilated by a lengthy, devastating battle of World
War I. She notes that even before the war ended, “vegetative regeneration was vigorous…as
‘ploughing’ of soils by artillery awoke old dormant seed and favoured new pioneer plant
species; while fauna such as rats and mice, birds, insects and snails proliferated” (9).
 In “African Farmers Beat Back Drought and Climate Change with Trees,” Mark Hertsgaard
reports on a transformation in the Sahel, a region that crosses the African continent along the
edge of the Sahara Desert. There, farmers are discovering and teaching their fellow farmers a
practice of growing crops in previously barren ground by encouraging native trees to grow in
the cultivated lands. This “farmer-managed natural regeneration” (16) improves the soil and
water retention while increasing crop yields, requiring only that the farmers change their
planting practices.
Challenge Essay Topic:
These three essays illustrate the impact of humans on the natural world, and describe ways that the
impact may be reversed by allowing trees to return. Working directly with all three of the essays in
the reading set, address the following questions: What are the benefits of restoring trees and forests
in these barren places? In other situations in which areas have been deforested, would it be
beneficial to restore the forests? Why or why not? As part of your essay, discuss the differences
between the three forests described in this reading set, and the benefits of allowing those forests to
grow.
