This assignment involves either reading a scholarly article or watching a film dealing with important issues relevant to our study of international relations. I have provided links to the article options. If you wish to select one of the films, you will have to access the film on your own. For each selection (whether article or film), there is a list of 5 accompanying questions. You will identify the number of each question (you do not need to copy the question stem over again) and for each question provide a detailed, well-developed answer of 1 to 2 paragraphs. The supporting resources for this assignment will be found by clicking on the link that says “Article/Film Analysis” on the left side of the screen. This assignment is worth 100 points
For the second writing assignment, you will watch one of three possible films (or select one of your own as long as it is relevant to our course of study) and answer a series of five questions pertaining to the film. If you select your own film, you will be required to generate your own list of 5 questions). The assignment is due by 11:30 PM EST on Monday, April 25. I have attached the questions for each of the films: The Fog of War, Thirteen Days, and Hotel Rwanda.
A. Questions for The Fog of War
1. Robert McNamara was controversial and polarizing figure in the 1960s. What adjectives are used to describe him in the film? How is his tenure remembered? How would you describe him?
2. Which of the 11 lessons did you find the most interesting or important? Why? With which lesson did you most sharply disagree? Why?
3. In what ways are the Vietnam and the war with Iraq similar? How are they different?
4. Social scientists sometimes talk about counterfactuals—“what ifs”—and there are varying opinions about the value of these counterfactual thought experiments. To what extent does this kind of thinking appear in The Fog of War? How does Morris communicate this?
5. Errol Morris considered several titles for the film before deciding on The Fog of War. Examples include The Logic of War, Only the Beginning, McNamara’s Century and Wilson’s Ghost?
