-There will be one book review of Ajantha Subramanian’s The Caste of Merit: Engineering Education in India, which we will read together as a class in the final weeks of the semester. This book review is intended to provide an opportunity for you to develop skills in the reading and analysis of secondary sources of historical scholarship by engaging in a close reading of a recent publication in the field. One week before the review is due, a prompt will be distributed in class with further instructions on how to write and structure the review. Please follow MLA guidelines (all sources cited should be referenced parenthetically, and the review must include a comprehensive “Works Cited” page) and bear in mind that your review will be graded on both content and form (spelling, punctuation, and grammar). The review should be 1200-1500 words in length
-The final assignment for the course invites you to practice writing the second
genre by writing a review of Ajantha Subramanian’s The Caste of Merit: Engineering Education
in India. This book review is intended to provide an opportunity for you to develop skills in the
interpretation and analysis of secondary sources of historical scholarship by engaging in a close
reading of a recent publication in the field.
-The first part of the review should offer a thorough summary of the book by describing its main
arguments. You need to give an honest account of the book and do justice to what the author
says. You should not describe what you wish the author had written; rather, keep the focus on
what the author actually wrote. Keep in mind that a full chapter-by-chapter summary is not
necessary; you can summarize the book’s content in creative ways that blend different parts of
the book together.
-The second part of the review should provide an analysis of the book by evaluating its claims in
light of the broader context of the course. You can ask whether the book is convincing or
whether there are potential oversights. Keep in mind that evaluating a book does not necessarily
have to be negative or lead to a harsh critique. Keep your eyes on the overarching argument of
the book regardless of how you decide to evaluate its contribution to the study of South Asia.
