There is no word minimum and you may state your topic in sentence format or just state the organism/ecosystem you wish to research. Before you begin your research please see https://www.marypoffenroth.com/research (Links to an external site.) and https://www.marypoffenroth.com/writing-resources (Links to an external site.)
In this assignment state your intended topic that you will be addressing in your paper AND list at least three references (using complete and correct bibliographic citations in CSE Name Year Style, more info below). These citations should include at least two peer reviewed journal articles (aka PRJs). For more information on CSE please check out https://www.marypoffenroth.com/cse (Links to an external site.)
In the last year, I have noticed a lot of student references include PLOS one. Although I am all about open access, PLOS one and other pay to play journals are not exactly the gold standard and I would prefer you not use them. SJSU provides access to a plethora of other journals.
For more information on this “pay to play” movement, where an author pays a premium to have their paper published and is “fast tracked” creating questionable reputability, check out https://www.nature.com/news/investigating-journals-the-dark-side-of-publishing-1.12666 (Links to an external site.)
For this paper, you will choose a threatened or endangered species to write a literature review paper on. You can do any endangered species, it does not have to be a mammal (think fish, amphibian, insect) and it doesn’t need to be an animal! (Think plants!). Lots of endangered species out there – get creative!!! Please note: when choosing your topic, make sure that you are able to find enough scholarly articles to write your paper. Some species are more researched than others.
You must have at least two peer reviewed journals in your references for this assignment. Web of Science (search in SJSU Library) and Google Scholar are great places to start. Make sure you also know what a peer reviewed journal is HERE (Links to an external site.)

If your paper is written on an unapproved topic your will lose a minimum of 30 points from the final grade.
Topics that you may NOT do are: tigers, cheetah, whales, pandas (red or giant), lions, jaguar, elephants, polar bears, rhinos, bluefin tuna, sea turtles, snow leopards, gorillas, chimpanzees, penguins, koala, monkeys, dolphins, sea lions, sea otters, African Wild Dog, Amur Leopard, Black Footed Ferret, pangolin, vaquita or California condors.
A note on submission: you should see submission options below. Since this is our first Turnitin.com assignment submitted via Canvas for the class, make sure you are able to see the submission button below. There is no additional login or password needed, everything occurs directly through Canvas. If, for any reason, you do not see submission entry way below, first try a different browser ( make sure to be on an actual computer, not a phone or tablet). Then, if that doesn’t work, please contact eCampus help desk at http://www.sjsu.edu/at/ec/ (Links to an external site.) for technical support.
So, if you have made it this far in the instructions… well done!
If you submit your topic statement NOT in the format below, you will get an automatic zero. Why? Because that shows me you didn’t read the instructions.
Here is the format. Submit your answers to the following three questions:
1. What is the species you would like to write your paper about? Have you checked the “no write” list above? (3 points)
2. What agency/organization has legally declared this species as threatened or endangered? ( 3 points)
3. In full CSE Name Year style, list three reputable citations below. A minimum of two of your citations must be from peer reviewed journals, aka PRJs. Please see https://www.marypoffenroth.com/cse (Links to an external site.) on how to cite in CSE name year style. (4 points)
