II. Writing Prompt: Throughout the novel readers are shown many stories detailing different cultural experiences. The characters teach and learn new lessons across generations. After reading, you are asked to engage in some sort of human-service act for someone else. A human-service act must be a task/experience where you help or engage with another person. Some human-service acts can be, but are not limited to:
Eating a cuisine that you normally would not be interested in
Helping cook dinner for your family or friends
Participating in a sport or activity that you would not be interested in
Doing the grocery shopping or errands for a family member
Reading a book/story to a younger sibling of their choosing
Volunteer services of any kind (volunteering in a library, at a retirement home, in a hospital, etc.)
After you complete your human-service act, you will write the story of your experience in narrative form. Your goal is to do something outside of your comfort zone that gives pleasure to someone else and then tell the story of your experience. Your narrative essay must be typed and in MLA format.
NOTE: The Joy Luck Club tells the stories of different cultures and perspectives in different generations. You are to tell the story of your experience doing something for someone else. Your human-service act does not need to be grand or laborious. The smallest of acts can impact us in the greatest of ways.
