There are five essay questions that make up the Midterm Examination for this course. 1. Values are the major premise by which we formulate our ideologies regarding social welfare policies and practices. Our personal, societal, and social work values are perhaps the most important factors in the practice of social work. Define, describe, and discuss five of the most basic values in the American society as listed and the major concepts, principles and tenets identified within each. (20%)

2. Identify and define the major social institutions of our American Society and describe in detail the influence and function(s) of each. (20%)
3. Our perspectives on social welfare come from diverse values that determine what we think social welfare should do and what its causes, purposes, functions, and results ought to be. Discuss the residual and the institutional perspective and contrast, compare, and identify differences in the two, . (20%)
4. Discuss the Feudal Society and the “age of feudalism” and compare and contrast this society to the practice of indenture servitude in the “Americas”. (20%)
5. The famous Elizabethan Poor Laws of 1601, a recodification whose power has existed for nearly three centuries legalized and made formal England’s responsibility for the poor. Discuss and examine the laws addressing the problems of the poor that preceded the poor laws and discuss and examine the three major tenets and categorizations of the Elizabethan Poor Laws of 1601. (20%)
