Theory Analysis Paper (Worth 30% of Final Grade, 100 Points Total)
This paper has three main objectives:
1) First, the paper involves conducting in-depth research on a particular health or mental
health disorder that affects children during infancy, early childhood, and/or
adolescence, (i.e., the developmental time period that the course covers). Select a
topic of interests to you in your current state of professional development (e.g., fetal
alcohol syndrome, cancer, childhood schizophrenia, autism, ADHD, malnourishment,
pediatric AIDS, childhood obesity). Please consult with the professor if you have
questions about topics. This topic should affect individual development, family structures
and processes, and possibly communities.
Conducting research is a skill that is necessary for any social work practice as practitioners must
not only have foundational knowledge of key theories and models of practice but also be up-to-
date on emerging evidence for theories and models.
2) Second, the paper allows students to apply knowledge of theories in understanding health
and mental health problems relevant for children in infancy and/or early childhood and
adolescence. The application of theories is a skill that will be worked on throughout the
semester, but this particular paper focuses on using a theory to describe what is currently
understood about a particular social problem/issue.
3) The next step in this understanding is then related to the third objective of the paper,
which is to provide students an opportunity to use theories to develop
interventions/treatments for those problems. This draws the connection between theory
and intervention.
The paper should address the following points:
I. Identification and Descriiption of Problem (15 Points)
1) Identify a health or mental health problem that affects children during infancy, early
childhood, and/or adolescence.
2) Describe the problem in terms of scope and severity, citing relevant statistics, etc.
3) Discuss the bio/psycho/social impact of the health or mental health disorder and the
ramifications of the problem for development in infancy/early childhood/adolescence.
4) Discuss the significance of the disorder within specific at-risk groups and/or
subpopulations. Discuss how individual, family, or community traits or conditions affect
the incidence and course of the disorder, such as SES, community violence, legal status,
etc.
9
5) Also, discuss any cultural implications (e.g., cultural perspectives of an illness that may
impact treatment seeking or receipt of quality treatment) if applicable.
II. Application of Two Theories (60 Points)
1) Identify two theories (one can be a perspective or framework) that can be used to
understand the health or mental health disorder.
2) Briefly describe the two theories based on course material and outside research.
3) Discuss the disorder in terms of the theories. For example, how do the theories help in
understanding the problem and causes/etiology/risk factors? Understanding its
development, progress, and perpetuation? Understanding its impact and ramifications?
Explaining behavior? Explaining poor functional outcomes etc. Here you are applying the
theories to the disorder.
III. Design of Intervention (15 Points)
1) Using the information in Section II above, design or identify an intervention at any level
(micro, mezzo, macro), that will address the identified health or mental health disorder.
2) Briefly identify the developmental/behavioral rationale for the intervention.
3) Explicitly describe how the theoretical underpinnings of the intervention respond or
relate to the causes/etiology/risk factors of the health or mental health disorder discussed
in Section II.
Additional Grading Criteria
a) Presentation: Points will be given to grammar and to presentation using APA 7th edition
writing format (e.g., a title page and headings). Therefore, you cannot get a 100% even if
your paper is strong in content, but weak in grammar and presentation (spelling, typos). This
includes page length. The paper should be typed, double-spaced, and in 12-point Times New
Roman font. The paper should have one-inch margins all-around, with the right-side margin
not justified. A cover page is necessary with the student’s name written last name first and
then first name. The citation style should be according to the American Psychological
Association (APA) seventh edition format but a running head and abstract are not necessary.
If you are not sure how to cite in APA style 7th edition format, please refer to the library
guide offered by the School’s librarian at https://libguides.calstatela.edu/socialwork.
Deviation from any of the above formatting requirements will result in the deduction of
points.
b) References & Citing: A list of 8 or more references should be included, with at least 5 being
peer-reviewed journal articles- (the main course textbook can be used but counts as only 1 of
8 references) – the remainder can be government or organizational websites used to find
statistics. You need to use APA 7th edition style throughout the text and reference page.
c) Length & Format: Your paper should be 8-10 pages in length without a cover page, typed,
double-spaced, with one-inch margins all around and a Times New Roman 12-point font.
Follow APA 7th edition writing style to include topical headings for each section of your paper
10
and a title page that is placed at the beginning of your paper. The title page does not count as one
of the required pages.
d) Contents: The quality of your paper contents will be evaluated based on the following criteria.
● Claims supported with scholarly sources and logical reasoning
● Demonstration of critical and analytical thinking abilities
● Provision of coherent discussions
● Inclusion of all the required paper components
