Most of your DFS placement agencies have clients who represent a variety of subgroups. The subgroups may be based on a wide variety of factors, including race/ethnicity, gender/gender identity, ability, age, criminal offence type, addictions, mental health, etc. This assignment requires you to write a brief summary of each subgroup served by your DFS. You will answer the following questions:
What subgroups are represented among the clients of your DFS agency?
What are the demographics and/or characteristics of each subgroup? This question will require some research, either publicly available information such as that collected by Statistics Canada and other researchers, or statistics internal to your DFS agency (if you have access to them).
What unique needs does each subgroup have that present challenges for your DFS agency? For example, offenders with mental health issues present unique challenges to most justice agencies; challenges around adequate treatment, fairness, and safety.
Write a single paragraph about each subgroup, answering the second and third questions within the appropriate paragraph (e.g., each paragraph will be about a specific subgroup, where you will discuss the demographics/characteristics and the unique needs of the identified subgroup). This is to be a brief survey of all the subgroups represented by the clientele of your DFS agency. While you will conduct some research, each paragraph should serve as a basic introduction to the subgroup it is about. Do not try to cram too much information into each paragraph.
The purpose behind this assignment is to help you choose a single subgroup to focus on for the remainder of your assignments in this course. This course will allow you to expand your knowledge about a subgroup with whom you are currently working or will be working in the future. If your DFS placement was altered at the last minute due to the pandemic, please get in touch with your instructor by email. In this case, you will be permitted to choose between writing about the client subgroups of your actual DFS agency or the client subgroups of the agency you would have completed your field study with. However, each of these exceptions must be approved, in advance, by your instructor.

Length: 1 to 3 pages, not including title page or reference list. Remember, this is a brief survey.
