Figure 1: The former Church of Christ Scientist (Lake Forest-Lake Bluff Historical Society)
The preservation of architectural heritage is specifically with regard to the Church of Christ Scientist buildings that are currently been used for other purposes. Re-using a building is in many ways a unique way in which to preserve it for posterity. One such building is the former Church of Christ Scientist church in Lake Forest, Illinois. The Historical Society of Lake Forest and Lake Bluff purchased the building to use it as a museum, as an administrative building, as well as a center for all their events and programs.
Lake Forest and Lake Bluff have many historical buildings of which the church at 509 East Deerpath is just one of them. The church was built in the year 1948, built in the predictable American colonial style. It is known as the New England style frame, with its 153-foot bell tower. In terms of what the proposed preservation of heritage means is that the building will be modified internally to prepare it for the specific purposes of The Historical Society. This would be necessary as they have 20,000 artifacts that needed anew home.
The reason for this purchase was for the fact that they have outgrown their current premises, but also that it is a single-story building. The plan is to reach a larger audience as a result. It is sad that heritage property need to be refurbished when re-used, but it would be a better way to preserve the outer structure, than for it to be razed or fall into disrepair. Thus, in order for historical building to be preserved, more companies should be encouraged to purchase disused building.
