The Music of The Beatles
Beatlemania Project
A major theme of the story of the Beatles and their approach to being a band was that until
they made it big in America, they did not believe they had succeeded.
For this assignment, you are to compare and contrast the Beatlemania of the years 1963 and
1964, which some scholars have labeled Beatlemania I and Beatlemania II. To guide your
analysis, you are to use the “tipping point” theory of Malcolm Gladwell and its amplification, in
terms of the Beatles, by Steven Stark in his Meet The Beatles.
First, the basics of Gladwell’s theory are nicely summarized in the document “The Tipping
Point” located within this Moodle unit.
Next, read the following quote on how this is applied by Steven Stark in his book Meet The
Beatles to the entire Beatles story:
In his book on the sociology of epidemics, The Tipping Point, Malcolm Gladwell has
described how a “social epidemic” reaches critical mass. It needs a susceptible
population; a group of “carriers” who will spread the “bug” to the masses; and a
quality that allows the “bug” (message) to stick. American Beatlemania had all those
crucial elements: a series of attributes that the public couldn’t get out of its head (the
Beatles’ Englishness, their look, their sensibility, their sound, and the reaction they
provoked); a group of key organizers who would push the “epidemic” incessantly (radio
DJs); and the age group most susceptible to crazes that exists – teenagers.
Your assignment should have five parts:
Part One
Take the “tipping point” theory and give an explanation for how this theory can
be applied to Beatlemania, give detailed examples to support your points and be
sure to cite your sources.
Part Two
Using this tipping point theory, identify the similarities of Beatlemania in both
years – 1963 and 1964 – give specific characteristics of these similarities, give
detailed examples to support your points and be sure to cite your sources.
Part Three
Using this tipping point theory, identify the differences of Beatlemania in both
years – 1963 and 1964 – give specific characteristics of these differences, give
detailed examples to support your points and be sure to cite your sources.
Part Four
Give your assessment of the evolution of the Beatles over these years and answer
whether there was one or two tipping points for Beatlemania.
Part Five – Bibliography / Works Cited
