Your job is to summarize the argument, analyze, and evaluate it. Your evaluation is the claim you are making about the effectiveness of the argument when you consider its claim, reasoning, use of appeals, and logical fallacies (if any). Ultimately, in analyzing an argument, “your goal is to understand its intended effect…in addition to its actual effect, the ways it creates this effect…to convey a message or make an argument” (Bullock and Goggin 119).
Consider:
The Claim
How the writer/speaker establishes the main idea, thesis, opinion, or belief of the argument that they will prove. What is its premise? In other words, on what assumptions does the writer base the argument? What is the thesis? Is it strong/accurate/clear?
Support
Examine the statements given to back up the claim of the piece. Evaluate supporting evidence. Is it sufficient? Is it accurate? Is it representative? Is it relevant to the argument being made? Are sources properly credited? Is fact-checking even possible?
These may take the form of facts, data, personal experience, expert opinion, evidence from other texts or sources, emotional appeals, or other means. The more reliable and comprehensive the support, the more likely the audience is to accept the claim.
You must address the use of ethos, pathos, and logos through specific rhetorical strategies and make a judgment on their effectiveness in communicating its message.
Identify where there are logical fallacies and how they impact the argument. Does it make faulty assumptions or show evidence of bias?
Warrant
The line of reasoning the argument employs. What is the connection between the claim and the supporting reason(s)?
Consider opposing arguments
Does the argument sufficiently address possible opposing viewpoints?
The essay will conclude with your overall evaluation of the effectiveness of the piece in making its argument and persuading its audience.
