The Great Gatsby novel is nearing 100 years old. Despite its age, its themes are still relevant today. Consider, for one thing, that Gatsby & Nick disagree about one’s ability to “repeat the past.” (Have you ever known someone desperate to recapture his/her past? Be sure to read the article posted earlier by Jesmyn Ward as she comments on such aspirations.) Nick says repeating the past can’t be done although Gatsby absolutely disagrees with him. Gatsby’s American dream wasn’t built completely on the future; in fact, it relied heavily on his past. (The green light is one motif in the novel; it acts as a symbol, connecting Gatsby to his dream, Daisy).
While the basic American dream includes a successful career, a house with a white picket fence, a two-car garage, and so on, Gatsby’s dream was achieving wealth only to capture Daisy’s attention and love.
REQUIREMENTS:
(1)Explain specifically how Gatsby acquired his identity and what he did to build an empire. You need one paragraph here with many specifics!
(2)Then, discuss why Gatsby wasn’t successful in his full pursuit of his dream, Daisy. Be sure that this is another paragraph of ideas about what prevented him from being fully successful in capturing his dream.
(3) Summarize Jesmyn Ward’s ideas as you explain why people still relate to The Great Gatsby today.
You should have at least 10 sentences total, but a solid answer with evidence will likely be twice as long!
