The goal of this assignment is for you to see if you could tell the story of the world from Prehistory to approximately 1500 CE through twenty objects from online museum collections. You get to choose the twenty objects, and place them chronologically into a timeline of World History — you could make this a creative assignment using PowerPoint.
Regardless of the format that you select for presenting your timeline, you must include the following:
1. You need a brief introduction that explains your methodology: how and why did you select the twenty objects? Did you choose to focus on a particular aspect of history across different civilizations? You could use a theme such as military history, women’s history, art, architecture, religion, etc. Whatever theme and objects you choose, you must have a thesis statement that explains your choices. You’ll be copying and pasting the photo of each object from the museum website into your presentation.
2. Be sure to include objects from a variety of civilizations in your presentation. It really must be comprehensive both in terms of chronology (you must include objects from different time periods) and in terms of geography (you must include objects from different places). You MUST NOT include objects that are exclusively limited to the United States. Remember that this is a WORLD HISTORY class.
3. Each object must be explained thoroughly, including when it was produced, where it was produced, and what story in history does it help to tell. Most of the museums provide a detailed explanation of each object that you’ll find, but I don’t want you to “copy and paste” those explanations. Rather, I want you to summarize in your own words what you’ve learned about the object from the museum website and more importantly, how it helps to explain your thesis statement and methodology.
4. Each object must be thoroughly documented. You’ll need to provide the museum website URL for each object, the date that you accessed the website and copied the photo of each object, along with the accession number of each object.
I have attached a list of Museum websites that you might want to consult, but please know that you are NOT limited to these few museums. Feel free to research any museums that might hold objects more suited to your thesis or methodology. Should you have any questions about this assignment, please send them along asap.
