QUESTION
Instructions for the “Deep dive” on a topic relevant to social issues of computing
The objective is to examine how a recent technological advance affects how we live and/or work. The
specific topic can be picked by the student. Example: A student could examine the impact of artificial
intelligence (AI), or a subset of AI, on a number of fronts:
National security
Community engagement
Ethics, law, or public policy
Public safety/crime
Labor force and the nature of work
Submit 1-2 paragraphs to the “Final paper idea OR Book report title” Submissions folder by 11:59 PM
July 26 saying “I will do a deep dive on . . .” and briefly describing the trend or topic to be covered.
The purpose of this is to ensure you are on the right track and help guide you in preparing your final
submission.
Your paper is due by 11:59 PM August 23 in the “Final paper OR Book report” Submissions folder. A
suggested table of contents and grading breakdown for the paper are shown on the next page. Length
will depend on topic and your writing style, but most students require 1500-2000 words to provide
adequate coverage.
Ensure that the “deep dive” contains current information. Imagine a current or prospective employer
is going to read it–You don’t want to give out-of-date information to the reader!
Remember that most of your final submission should be written in your voice. It is highly
recommended for you to support your ideas with authoritative source material–It makes your writing
more credible, and it demonstrates initiative. But the source material should support your words, not
replace them. A very rough rule of thumb is that no more than 10-20% of your briefing should be
direct quotes from a source. Cite your sources as noted on p. 6 of our Syllabus.
See the table of contents for your paper on the next page.

Submit 1-2 paragraphs to the “Final paper idea OR Book report” Submissions folder, as described on
the prior page.
(95%) Final paper
Your submission to the “Final paper OR Book report” Submissions folder should contain, in your own
words:
1. (25%) Context – This should provide the necessary background or introduction to the topic. If
you’re not sure where to start, use the following as a guide:
a. Historical Background – A short chronology of events/drivers/people/vendors that were
instrumental in the development and ongoing evolution of the subject area: When did it
start? What were key events since its origin?
b. Current State – Describe what is happening now in the topic area. For instance: What
advances are in progress? What are the key use cases? Who is involved? Where is the
growth? What are the benefits? Challenges? This isn’t intended to be exhaustive. It
should provide “just enough” information for the reader to comprehend the issue
analysis in the next section.
c. Market data/forecasts – To the extent that you can, provide summary data on
forecasted marketplace adoption (e.g., “the market for X will grow from $Y now to $Z
five years from now”). This may need to be qualitative (e.g., “moderate growth
expected in the next 3-5 years”) if quantitative data is not available. Cite your source(s).
2. (45%) Content – Identify and analyze three (3) social issues of computing, similar to the societal
impact analysis conducted in Assignment 1: Amazon. In the Amazon assignment, the issues were
given to you. On the final paper, you must identify the 3 social issues of computing you wish to
explore.
As with the Amazon assignment, for each issue: a) Look at all sides of the issue, and provide
support with cited sources, data, evidence, facts, and opinions from thought leaders; b) Finish
by stating your point of view and fully explaining why you think this way.
3. (15%) References – You should have at least five credible, rigorous, relevant, and timely
sources—other than our course materials and Wikipedia. I encourage you to use resources
available via the DePaul library. It is expected that each source will have proper citations at the
end of the paper, and one or more in-text citations, so that it is clear how your outside research
contributed to the substance of your paper.
