Foundation Maths:
Josephine recorded the Temperature outside her apartment every 10 minutes after sunset one Dry-Season evening in Darwin to see if the temperature and time after sunset could be modelled mathematically.

1) Which variable would be considered the ‘explanatory’ variable and which the ‘response’ variable? Give Reasons for your choices
2) On the scatterplot above, use a ruler to draw what you consider to be the ‘line of best fit’ (hence the association between Temperature and Time is linear).
3) Describe the strength and direction of the association between Temperature (T) and time (t) in this situation.
4) Hence, explain what happens to the Temperature (T) over time (t).
5) The linear equation that connects Temperature (T) and time (t) (and can be used to model Temperature) has been found to be:
= ?0.124 + 29.8
Use this formula to predict the Temperature (T°C) at 25 minutes after sunset.
6) Transpose (rearrange) this formula to make time (t) the subject of the formula.
7) Using your transposed formula, determine at what time (t) is the Temperature (T), predicted to be 27°C.
8) Considering the data provided in the table, would you consider this prediction (time at 27°C) to be reasonable? Explain your answer.
