In other words, one must do what is necessary to succeed, regardless of how detrimental certain actions are to competitors, employees, or even customers. After all, the main goal of most businesses is to be successful by producing results. So, what differentiates the most successful businesses from the ones that fail? Is it employee benefits, quality products, or a strong business framework? Martin Buber claims that the concept of love plays a critical role in defining the purpose of a business beyond profit and responsibility. This notion not only plays a role in business, but is what takes companies to higher levels of success.Every business has a purpose, but according to Simon Sinek, “people don’t buy what you do, they buy why you do it.” Without a clear understanding of the why behind a goal, people will often rely on will power to succeed. This alone, will eventually result in burnout or the loss of motivation to achieve that goal. That is why it is imperative for leaders to understand that the notion of love and the establishment of trust, will to take their businesses to the next level. Everyone wants to be financially stable, provide for their family, and enjoy life. However, the drive to succeed, even in difficult conditions, is knowing that you are serving something greater than yourself.The next level of success starts with defining the why behind a business and figuring out if that reason is meaningful enough to make employees want to push the boundaries of what they think is possible. In the military, this is sometimes referred to as a vision statement. A vision statement is a clear and concise statement that defines the purpose of a specific organization. The statement is usually somewhere all members can see it and it is often reiterated several times throughout the year. This simple and transparent message not only improves unit cohesion, but highlights why the sacrifices military members make every day are so important.When it comes to just and care, “we need leaders not in love with money but in love with justice, not in love with publicity but in love with humanity,” (Martin Luther King Jr). Therefore, leaders should focus on what their company’s contribution to society will look like and communicating that vision to their employees. It is also important to note that business ethics do not need to be grounded in more concrete tenets. Humans are emotional creatures that are driven by more than the conventional means of success.
