The implementation of the new policy that allows athletes to have monetary compensation for their image and likeness has some pros as well as some cons. We will look at one of each. One of the PROs for the new policy is that the athletes will be getting monetary compensation for the use of their image. If the athletes are at large and successful universities that opens lots of doors for them both for exposure and income. The other upside to this is that for some athletes who may be required to work long hours after school and sports it would allow them to use th income from their images as the income instead, opening more time studying and sports. A CON to this new policy is that the athletic pool is over saturated with athletes every year. There is no way that out of the 1000s of athletes they would all be offered the same monetary compensation to any type of compensation at all. The athletes that were at larger and more successful colleges would have more exposure which in turn would open up more opportunities for them to be paid. The athletes are smaller or less known schools wouldn’t have the same poibility for benefiting from their likeness.
Overall it seems like this policy can have some positive implication when it was implemented however I am not sure that it would be beneficial in the long run in terms of sport in benefit since all of the athletes will now also be losing for exposure so that brands will want to use their images so they woudl have the monetary benefit.

I remember first hearing about the possibility that the NIL policy would be implemented in college sports. I thought that it was a great idea. A pro of this policy is that athletes can make a profit from their name. For so long universities made millions of dollars from these athletes’ accomplishments on the field but the ones playing the game were getting nothing but the cost to attend that school. Although that is a great opportunity that cost is nowhere near the revenue they generate from playing their sport. Profiting from their name allows the athletes to support their families or contribute to their future life regardless if they decide to go pro or not. Also, I believe that this is great because professional leagues like the NBA, WNBA, NFL, etc. have requirements before an athlete can enter their league through the draft or free agency. For instance, the WNBA requires players to stay in college for either 4 years or until they turn 22. In addition, only 36 athletes will be drafted and less than 50 percent of them will make a roster due to the small number of teams. With the NIL policy, they will be able to get money and opportunities that they can utilize after graduating. A con of this policy is the drama that may result from pay discrepancies between players due to their popularity. A possible solution for this is for the university to help each athlete with a baseline endorsement where each player gets the same amount of money. Problems could still arise, but I think this could help less famous athletes that play, who would not get an opportunity otherwise.
Overall I think this policy is more good than bad because it allows student-athletes to earn profit from their name. I also believe this policy opens up more opportunities for these athletes post-college, even if they do not decide to go pro.
