Slave Narrative Reflection Project
This project is connected to Frederick Douglass’ Life of an American Slave, chapter 1, and Harriet Jacobs’ Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, chapters 14, 15, and 16.
Length: 10 minutes or so, recorded
Directions: In a reflection, consider the way that genealogy, bloodlines, and family are included as dominant themes and references in the four chapters read from these two slave narratives. For this reflection, you should consider the way that both black and white families are portrayed and threatened by slavery, in Jacobs and Douglass’ respective narratives. Note what Douglass says about his Master at the beginning of his narrative, for instance. Note that, for family issues, Jacobs discusses her white mistress and Dr. Flints wife quite a bit, too (135). But also talk about past bloodlines, genealogies that Douglass introduces at the beginning of his chapter, for instance. You can look at the way that family history is mentioned in both pieces and consider the reason that Jacobs and Douglass foreground this part of their lives.
Also, read at least one section from each of the slave narratives while making your recording. Explain your logic, using some evidence, in other words.
Note: I would prefer you to be in front of the camera for this project. If that idea makes you uncomfortable, then just record your voice. As a side note, I’ll be in front of the camera for my weekly online lecture this week.
Note: For technology, I recommend using Quick Time Player on your computer. I use this application on my Mac for weekly recordings. You could also use the camera and recording feature on your phone. Upload your response by Sunday, 15 July at 11:59 p.m. onto the Moodle assignment feature. Any late assignment submission is deducted one-letter grade per 0-24 hours late.
This project is worth 15% of the course grade. I plan on evaluating the recording now on technical know-how but instead effort put forth, focus on the question, and quality of the response.
For this recording, no “Works Cited†page is needed, and no unapproved outside source should be used; but mention the section/page number for the quoted passages from each author.
I often use loose, hand-written notes when speaking and recording, and I recommend you do the same. Don’t read verbatim from something you’ve typed up. Everything you say should be in your own voice and from your own original ideas, of course.
