Prompts:
1) Select one of your discussion responses for one of the three plays and expand it into an essay.
2) 20th century literature often is devoid of heroes or is rife with antiheroes, characters that do not succeed and/or few would hold up as a model or any society they would want to live in. Discuss one of the two modern plays we’ve read (the two other than Hamlet) and discuss whether or not these plays contain one or more characters that could be considered heroes as we understand that term from Unit 1.
3) Use the terminology of drama in a close analysis of one of the three plays.
4) Some think that Hamlet is the greatest work of literature in any language. Leo Tolstoy, a 19th century Russian writer we will read in Unit 3, thought Shakespeare’s plays taught either poor morals or amorality. What do you think? Do you agree with the former or the latter, or do you have a completely different view?
Instructions:
Write an essay that responds directly to ONE of the prompts above.
Your thesis should answer the question posed in the prompt you choose and should appear at the end of the introduction.
Also in the introduction, after providing a hook to grab the reader’s attention, summarize the play you are responding to. (You cannot assume that your audience has read what you have.)
Make sure each body paragraph has a topic sentence that includes a point or reason that supports your thesis. Also, thoroughly explain your points/reasons.
Use at least one quote in each body paragraph (most likely each paragraph will include more than one if not several). Your quotes should primarily come from the play, but they can also come from outside sources (magazines, books, the internet, etc.). Remember to explain your quotes—you can never assume that the reader will understand a quote in the same way you do, so explain how they support the point you are trying to make in any given situation or paragraph. Also, cite your quotes, providing the page number in parenthesis at the end of the quote.
Refer to handouts 1-4 under “Literary Resources” (select Modules, then Course Resources) and whichever sample essay/s seem appropriate for your chosen topic or prompt to generate ideas and to give you some guidance on what the end product should look like.
Include a Works Cited page.
Essay length: 3 pages minimum (without the Works Cited page).
This essay is worth 100 points.
