Research Project (Please Create a More Interesting Title than “Research Project”)
For this project, you will conduct research and then present it in the form of a PowerPoint, Prezi, or other audio/visual presentation. You are not writing a paper. This assignment is not an opinion piece; you will draw your own conclusions, but they will be research-based—fact based. This kind of work requires credible information as evidence.
Your research topic will be drawn from one the following options (it is possible that some of these issues could overlap), and you will need to research and develop an argument about a specific aspect of the larger topic:
Mental Health Issues
Racial oppression/Systemic racism
Addiction/Chemical Dependency
The Covid-19 pandemic
Online/Virtual/Remote Learning
Developmental Trauma/Trauma Disorders
Working adult students and higher education
This assignment requires a minimum of 3, but not more than 5 outside sources. In addition to your minimum of three sources, you may also include a personal interview as a source. For example, you could interview chemical dependency counselor about addiction or a mental health professional about mental health issues. You are to use credible and reliable sources from the MCC Library database dated within the last 3 years.
Your slides/presentation material must include in-text citations when drawing information from your sources.
Your last slide must be a Works Cited page.
Your presentation should include:
Because this is an oral presentation, there should be an audio component, so that your audience actually hears you discussing your topic. You may imbed this in the presentation itself, or you may simply video yourself giving your presentation and upload the video to the dropbox. Either is fine.
An introductory slide with a clear, thesis (debatable claim) about your topic. Your reader should be able to easily identify your thesis statement, even though you do not literally write “My thesis is…”
Sufficient slides to support your thesis and provide ample analysis of your research.
This presentation will be roughly 5-7 minutes long. In general, presentations move at a pace of 1-2 slides per minute. Less than 10 slides would not be sufficient for the scope of this project. More than 15 is probably not necessary.
A couple of conclusion slides that sum up your argument and provides the “Big So what?!” In other words, why is this information important–relevant? What are the implications of the information you have uncovered, and of the conclusions you have drawn?
Grammar, punctuation, spelling, and sentence structure should are important, as with any college paper or professional presentation.
