As you become involved in different activities and with different people, your roles may change to match the needs of these situations and environments. You have roles in the context of your family, in the context of your community, and in the context of your employment.The forensic psychology professional who works with police can perform many roles as well, depending on the duties and contexts of the police professionals. Their job was to be guardians of peace or bodyguards for rulers. In addition, in ancient Greece, slaves were used as police to keep order and to control crowds. Romans organized the first non-military police force when Augustus Caesar created separate units to be bodyguards, some of whom were undercover. The Romans also created separate units to protect the peace during the daytime hours and the nighttime hours. Duties eventually increased to include arrest and investigation functions. The roles of police officers continue to change and develop along with the needs of the people they serve.Just as the roles of police officers are many and varied, so are the roles of the forensic psychology professional. What may have started out as one or two psychology professionals acting as consultants to police departments has mushroomed into a specialized profession integrated into the functioning of law enforcement agencies and has developed to match the needs of the police professional. This integration provides police professionals with expertise that improves their abilities, performance, and productivity in day-to-day operations.To prepare for this Discussion:Review Chapter 2 in the course text, Introduction to Forensic Psychology: Research and Application. Think about the roles that forensic psychology professionals could perform in each context, and consider how they could impact police professionals in these contexts.

Police professionals developed because of the change in the contexts of where and how people were living. In the late 19th century, due to the Industrial Revolution, London’s militia was responsible for controlling the level of crime. However, since crime was on the rise and the militia appeared ineffective, a need arose for something new. Sir Robert Peel developed the Metropolitan Police Force (thereafter known as “bobbies” or “peelers”), which consisted of constables and inspectors. In the United States, police forces also developed along with industrialization and population growth. As contexts changed, demands changed and police became more specialized in their duties and assignments. As a result, forensic psychology professionals also became more specialized in their tasks. They continue to work alongside police professionals, within a multitude of contexts, and contribute to their successes and help improve their operations. Today, forensic psychology professionals serve a number of roles in an internal context—aiding police operations, administration, and servicing police officers through training, support, and evaluation.
