Robert
Forbes is a Caucasian, Baby Boomer, who has worked for AMTRAK for over 32
years. He is the Lead Operations Manager. He manages ten locomotives in the
West Coast Region of the company. His job is to ensure all locomotives have the
appropriate information needed to succeed at their job. Tiger takes a direct
flight from Detroit to Seattle-Tacoma Airport. The flight was approximately 3.5
hours in the air. He arrives at SEA-TAC Airport collects his belongings and
picks up the rental. He takes the 35-50 minute drive headed south on
Interstate-5 in horrible traffic to the Tacoma office where the West Coast
Region headquartered. Already annoyed due to the terrible traffic, Tiger
arrives at the West Coast Facility and asks the receptionist if he can speak to
Mr. Robert Forbes? The receptionists call Mr. Forbes office, and he exclaims
that someone will be downstairs to greet him. About 30 minutes later a young
beautiful Filipino girl Marisol arrives to take Tiger to Mr. Forbes office as
they are walking to the office.
DIALOGUE AT THE WEST COAST OFFICE
Marisol:
“Hi! Tiger, I’m so sorry for the delay. We are extremely busy around here.
We had an issue with one of the tracks. Mr. Forbes is working to get the
situation under control. So, please bear with us. May I ask you a
question?”
Tiger:
“Sure.”
Marisol:
“Are you Pinoy?”
Tiger:
“Laughs, actually I’m Vietnamese.”
Marisol:
“(She scoffs at him) Oh Well! Here we are. Just have a seat right here and
I’ll grab Mr. Forbes.
Tiger:
“(Shaking his head) Okay!
(In his head he thinks, I can’t believe Marisol thinks Filipinos are better
than Vietnamese people – it’s that crazy Asian cast system all over again)
A
few minutes later, Mr. Forbes enters the office highly upset.
Mr.
Forbes: “I’m so sick of Corporate not giving money to take care of these
issues. This crap ticks me off. I’m sorry, who are you?”
Tiger:
“Sir, my name is Tiger Phan. I came here from Philadelphia on behalf of
the CEO of the company for an assessment of the Consumer Report.
Mr.
Forbes: “Does it look like I have time to deal with a Consumer Report
right now?”
Tiger:
“Sir, I understand you are having issues. However, I have a job to do, and
I have strict instructions from our leadership to get a Consumer Report
completed for all regions of AMTRAK. I would greatly appreciate your help in
this matter.”
Mr.
Forbes: “Well, you can tell Corporate they can kiss my.. well. Don’t say
that, but I have more pressing matters than a Consumer Report. What do you want
to know anyway?
Tiger:
“Sir, I have been traveling all day and have not been at a hotel or
anything. I came straight here. I need to get some figures from you so that I can
move forward with my report. I have the numbers from accounting. But I was
hoping to get your thoughts on what you see since you work in the
Seattle-Tacoma area every day.”
Mr.
Forbes: “Well aren’t you on your game (Sarcastically)! Where did you go to
school boy?”
Tiger:
“I went to Wharton and please don’t call me boy!”
Mr.
Forbes: “Oh don’t take it personally. I’m just playing with you! Go back
to the hotel and I’ll sit down tonight and crunch some numbers. How does that
sound?”
Tiger:
“(Shaking his head) – That’s fine sir! And politely leaves the room.”
Mr.
Forbes: (Mumbles) – I am tired of seeing all of these Chinks running around
here. It just isn’t American.
