Rhetorical analysis of a social Justice related story (Individual)
The purpose of this assignment is to conduct a rhetorical analysis of a news story with/without an accompanying image on gender, diversity and justice (see Rhetorical Analysis Template).
In your analysis you will understand the interrelationships between images, perception and policy by relying on the ethos, logos, pathos and exigency of the rhetorical triangle.
The process of conducting a rhetorical analysis enhances your understanding and effective argumentation of the interrelationships between images, perception, current events and policy by relying on the elements of the rhetorical triangle. Grounded in semiotics, you will apply a holistic approach while examining your social location as you analyze the context, norms and values surrounding text and images
1) ethos (writer’s character, credibility and authority)
Gather up every clue you can about who the author is and why they care, why theyre trying to accomplish, what do they know about this, are they experts in their researcrch? Well researched or sloppy?
Are they biased or not? The information of bias? Only show one side to show manipulative or coercive words? (can be, and preferred to be used in logos)
2) logos (use of logic, facts and evidence)
Are the claims reasonable? Are they well supported? Clearly expressed? Can you understand it? Do they give adequate examples and proof? Do they need more warrant? What about the organization of it? Did the ideas build upon one another? Was it clear as it progressed how it got together? Did it make sense?
3) pathos (appeal to the emotions of the audience)
Anything pertaining to the emotional appeal. For example: Was it interesting? Engaging? Boring? Frustrating to read and good in the end? Find reasons why and explain the argument in this.
When you respond to not the topic, (news article in this case), don’t talk about what our opinion is on the article, but critique the way the author presented their points were. The goal is to question whether they did a good job or not
