Our bodies have a built-in protection system. When danger is perceived, the sympathetic nervous system enacts a stress response that prepares the body to respond to the dangerous situation (Bialer & Miller, 2011). When children experience trauma, particularly recurring trauma such as living with abuse, neglect, or a parent with addiction struggles, that stress response is continually being triggered. They live in a constant state of stress, making it very difficult to regulate their arousal back to a calm state. Additionally, trauma over time impacts neurological development (Fraser et al., 2017).
Using a play-based approach using a sensorimotor approach is a beneficial approach to begin trauma-informed care (Fraser et al., 2017). Some interventions could be drawing or creating art using multisensory materials. Sensory can be provided through creating a sensory-stimulating environment through the use of a sensory room to provide a calming environment that also provides a variety of sensory input (Fraser et al., 2017). Some examples of tools that could be used are dim or colored lighting (bubble lamps, lava lamps), lycra swings that provide proprioceptive and vestibular input, and large bean bags or cushions. Once the foundational sensory needs are met, and increased self-regulation is achieved a cognitive approach can be implemented through interventions such as visualization, and mindfulness techniques.
The TED talk video explains the impact of childhood trauma impacts health outcomes. The entire TED talk was extremely eye-opening for me, and in some ways heartbreaking. The three points that most resonated with me are:
Learning about ACE (Adverse Childhood Experiences) – Dr. Burke Harris describes a study that was conducted on children to see patterns in ACEs and health outcomes later in life. I was honestly shocked by the data, and specific areas with increased health risks (TED, 2015).
I thought the way that Dr. Burke Harris described the “fight or flight” response with an analogy of a bear was very enlightening. She described how the body responds to seeing a bear, and how that prepares an individual to fight or run from the bear. She ended her analogy by talking about the “bear” coming home each night, referencing possibly an abusive or addict parent. The way she explained this opened my eyes to the physiological reaction that many children face when living in these adverse circumstances (TED, 2015).
The third thing that was surprising to me is that there is not a larger response from the health community and the public. Dr. Burke Harris talked about wanting to shout this discovery from the rooftop, and the more I learn about trauma, I have the same reaction. This hits home for me, in a deeply personal way as I have a sister who struggles with addiction, and severe mental health issues and has two young children. While this knowledge is heartbreaking and alarming it also lights a fire under me to advocate for treatment and to not let childhood trauma be pushed under the rug in my own family and in my professional practice. Trauma-informed care is something I am deeply curious to learn more about, as I believe it is a critical component of working in healthcare (TED, 2015).
