Socioeconomic status does not only include income but also includes education received, financial security as well as the ideas of social class and status (SES, n.d.). Socioeconomic status includes the overall quality of life of older adults (SES, n.d.). In the United States, there is an increasing amount of older adults, involving 13% of the population are 65 years of age or older (SES, n.d.). Most of the older adults living within the United States are living below poverty. Therefore, these individuals rely heavily on their social security as a form of income. So how does this relate to their health status? 1 in 10 older adults report a form of disability and have the limited ability to work (SES, n.d.) 1 in 3 older adults report having a form of chronic illness and are unable to afford medications for these illnesses (SES, n.d.). Since these individuals have limited income and suffer from a disability or chronic illnesses, this greatly impacts their quality of life. Several older adults experience malnutrition due to depression or physical abuse from caregivers (n.d.).
In occupational therapy, we can provide education to caregivers and how to avoid caregiver burnout as well as increase overall safety to maintain their health. Occupational therapists can create a program within the community on providing resources to older adults in order to receive food or materials needed to survive. By doing this, it would help eliminate some of the expenses used on toiletries and groceries to use on medications. Therefore, this would increase their overall quality of life by addressing their needs for survival.
