Qualitative research describes situations and experiences from the point of view of another. The information is subjective because the researcher is basing their information on another person and can develop empathy from having experienced something similar (Grove, Gray, Burns, 2015). There are several types of qualitative research. Firstly, Phenomenological research is used to gather information from participants about their actual life experiences. This method is often used to gain insight into areas where there is little known about the subject matter or when the subject matter is sensitive in nature. The researcher is seeking to gain an understanding of how a particular life event affects an individual
Grounded theory research is based on symbolic reaction theory where it is used to discover problems that exist in a social scene and how the person views or deals with them. Grounded theory helps close the gap between theory and empirical research. Data is reviewed by the researcher and repeated ideas, concepts, or elements become apparent and are tagged with codes, which have been extracted from the data. Eventually, the codes can be grouped into concepts, and then into categories that may later become the basis for the new theory. Grounded theorists and phenomenologists are alike in that they, collect and analyze data from a subjects’ perspective. Both involve social aspects, and true-life experiences, and seek to explore a subject’s experiences in their living environment. However, the grounded theory describes or explains the phenomenon under study, and how a person views it.
Lastly, ethnographic research. Ethnographic research is the study of people and cultures, many times, by observation (Helbig, 2018). Ethnographic research describes the various systems and relationships that surround the everyday life of individuals and sometimes specific cultural practices. For example, if a nurse wants to study pain management and how a specific culture handles pain, ethnographic research can be used. The nurse will study individuals in their own environment and gather information through interviewing individuals. Once a nurse has gathered enough information, they can use the valid research by delivering adequate care based on one’s culture.
