After completing the cultural competence checklist, I realized that there are many areas that I need to improve in. But I’ll start with my strengths. Two of my strengths are that I know how to share my own culture and I always try to learn and grow in areas that may have gaps in my knowledge. I do well with sharing who I am with what I know and with trying to learn more about others. I try to have an open mind and an understanding of different people everyday before going to school or work. With that being said, there are many weaknesses that I have but the main one is I don’t intentionally seek out people who are different from myself or who challenge me. I tend to stay in my own little circle outside of work and school. This is an area that I need further development in. According to the NAEYC (1995), “For young children to develop and learn optimally, the early childhood professional must be prepared to meet their diverse developmental, cultural, linguistic, and educational needs” (p. 1). This quote stuck out to me because I realized that if I am going to be a future teacher, I need to be able to meet my student’s diverse needs. No two students will be alike. If I seek out people who are different from myself now, I can have more of an understanding of the different cultures, beliefs, and families when I become a teacher. I shouldn’t just settle with knowing the “tip of the iceberg.” I want to truly learn about other people’s culture in depth. Another weakness of mine is that I don’t know my own family’s history of immigration and assimilation. I only know of my grandparents’ life story and my parents. Everyone in my family has lived here and for the most part has not moved. I have never thought to ask about my great grandparents or if anyone knows who moved to California in the first place. As Julie Olsen Edwards said in the Start With Yourself video, “We have to start with ourselves and recognize what in our life made us who we are.” I agree with this statement and now have to put it to action on learning more about my family’s past in order to learn more about myself and my history.

1. Awareness: In this area, my two strengths would be: Value Diversity and Be Curious. These are my strengths because I value other cultures everyday. I am not one to bash on the people around me especially about who they are as a person. I view every culture and difference in a positive way. I love learning about different cultures and experiencing how each culture does things . We live in one of the most diverse states in the country and I feel lucky to have the resources to experience these. I will forever be curious and eager to learn as much as I can about different cultures and different ethnicities. These two strengths help me with connecting with others and being about to take what I have learned or experienced to teach those around me. In the Start With Yourself video, Julie Edwards states, “If I am going to be effective working with children, in this really diverse and equitable world, I have to understand my own life in those terms. You can’t do that alone. It requires talking to other people about it” (Edwards 1:50). This is the most important aspect of learning not only about yourself but about others because gaining others opinions can actually help oneself see aspects they didn’t notice before. If I am able to properly learn about my own culture then I can be confident enough to share and teach others about what it consists of. My two weaknesses in this area are: Know Myself and Share My Culture. I feel as if I don’t really know myself in a cultural aspect because I do not feel like I truly have culture. Along with not being good at sharing my culture because, again, I don’t really feel as if I have a culture within my ethnicity. This is why I feel my weaknesses are not knowing myself and not being able to share my culture.
Knowledge: In this area I feel my two strengths are: Gain From My Mistakes and Ask Questions. I would say that gaining from my mistakes is one of my strengths because I tend to always learn from whatever I do wrong. I am a very visual person so it always helps me individually see what I did wrong specifically and how I can improve. Along with learning from my mistakes, I like to always ask questions. Most of my friends are different races and I constantly find myself asking them questions about how they do things. It is so fun to learn and experience different cultures and asking questions is a great way of getting more information to understand the diversity. My two weaknesses in this area are: Know My Own Family History and Know My Limitations. These are my two weaknesses because I know absolutely nothing about my family’s history. My parents were never taught about their history so it was never passed down to me. I have a hard time prioritizing one topic at a time, so knowing my limits is one of my weaknesses. My mind switches from topic to topic so when I am actively learning about a certain culture I sometimes get ahead of myself and switch to a new topic.
Skills: My two strengths in this area are: Challenge Discriminatory And/Or Racist Behavior and Act Respectivly In Cross- Cultural Situations. I always stand up for others around me no matter what the situation is. I never let someone else belittle another person especially for thor race, gender, or sexual orientation. I believe that teaching children information about each of those topics is very important so that they have a grasp on diversity and self identity. According to Harper, “The ultimate result of the child’s identity is a sense of positive self-esteem, confidence, worth, entitlement and goals” (Harper 2022). When children are taught about differences, they learn to not be uncomfortable with the unknown and to be confident with themselves. My two weaknesses in this area are: Recognize My Own Cultural Biases and Become Engaged. These are my weaknesses because I feel as if I am not as engaged as I could be. I see a few of my friends who go to pride marches or go to events that host different cultures and I have not been to one before. It is not that I don’t want to go, I find myself putting other needs before them and I want to work on that aspect of my life. I want to work on all my weaknesses I stated above and continue using my strengths.
