Weight: 25%
Length: 5-7 pages (approximately 1500 words)
For your final essay you will research and write on one of the below essay topics. Your
essay will contain a clear thesis and distinct, well-developed main points. Clearly connect
your main points to specific examples from the novel and relevant scholarly sources.
Research Requirements
In addition to the novel itself, you are required to cite a minimum of three scholarly
sources found in MRU’s collection of digital and print resources. Any additional sources
do not have to be scholarly but must be reputable. Adhere to MLA style to format your
essay and reference your sources: both in-text citations and a Works Cited page are
required.
Please refer to the library’s MLA Referencing Guide for Literary Research Papers, available
on the MRU Library website. Failure to properly cite sources will result in a grade
deduction. Essay showing evidence of plagiarism will receive a zero.
Research Essay Topics
1. Explain the significance of the Soucouyant myth in this novel. What purpose does
it serve for both Adele and her son?
2. Soucouyant has been described as a “post-national coming-of-age novel”. The
protagonist struggles to bridge adolescence and adulthood, while also trying to
reconcile the distance between the culture he’s grown up in and the culture he’s
inherited. How is the protagonist’s maturation complicated by his cultural
ambivalence? And how is this resolved?
3. Explore the connection between storytelling and self-identity. How do the novel’s
main characters create a narrative of their lives and how does this inform their
sense of self? How do stories bring them to a place of acceptance so they can
envision how to move forward? Choose a specific character to focus your
discussion: the protagonist, Meera or Adele.
