In “the Mini” we will move through the steps of the research process together.  In “the Mini” we will all research and write on the topic of: The Separation of Church and State. The research and research-writing process will culminate in a research-driven essay 900-1400 words in length.
Assignment:
With the class, research the issue of the separation of church and state.
This is a very broad topic, and will need to be narrowed down
Although at first glance the topic may not interest you, closer examination will hopefully allow you to find an aspect, angle, or focus that does engage you.
Narrow the issue, guided by a more focused research question.
Research a focused aspect of the topic/issue—we will look at sources together, and you will have opportunity to find your own sources as well.
Select 3-5 sources that you can use as a basis for understanding and communicating about the focused aspect of this issue that you have explored.
Sources must be valid, reliable, and appropriate for the rhetorical situation—in most cases that will mean scholarly, academic sources.
The majority of your sources should be sources with ideas and claims (arguments), rather than lists of “facts.”
For “The Mini” more sources is not necessarily better; three strong, focused sources that clearly connect with each other can be enough in most cases.
Carefully craft a research-driven academic essay (900-1400 words) in which you make and support, a clear claim. In so doing you will “join the academic conversation” around the focused aspect of the issue that you have chosen to research.
Make and support a clear claim;
Demonstrate that you fully understand each of your sources;
Incorporate the ideas of the sources into your writing with frequent use of attributive tags (Smith claims…. She suggests…. Smith goes on to say…, etc.);
Organize your well-developed, academic essay effectively;
Write with appropriate academic style and diction;
Edit and polish carefully for nearly-flawless grammar and mechanics.
