Required Components
Write a 4- 5 page* double-spaced essay with an introduction, conclusion, and body paragraphs with examples and evidence from the reading and elsewhere supporting your points. You MUST use sources, one of which must be Singer’s or Miller’s book, and you must have a Works Cited page.* I encourage you to find source material in the library databases index. an introduction (with thesis)
claim, grounds, warrant, backing, qualifier, and rebuttal
strong topic sentences
supporting detail from sources, such as articles from online databases, or reputable online sources–Singer or Miller must be one of your sources. You must have at least 6 sources total. That means you have to find 5 others using the Library Databases.
conclusion
a Works Cited page (Links to an external site.)* detailing the works you actually cited (quoted or paraphrased) in your essay. Your Works Cited page does not count as one of your 4-5 pages.
Make sure to have a good balance between websites and articles from the research databases.
Incorporate instructor feedback from previous essays.
Prompt
Rebut Singer’s or Miller’s argument by arguing why his entire argument is wrong or why one aspect of his argument is wrong. (You can zoom in on one chapter/topic or address each book as a whole.)
For example, you could argue:
Singer’s/Miller’s arguments are unsupported
Singer’s/Miller’s argument(s) is/are illogical (using the logic material you are learning)
Singer/Miller fails to consider important counterarguments or other relevant factors (if you choose this explain what they are)
Point out any logical fallacies you think exist in his argument(s)
These bulleted items are examples to get you thinking; you are not limited to these options in constructing your rebuttal. Feel free to change the exact wording.
Finally, you need to write this rebuttal even if you actually agree with Singer. This is an intellectual exercise.
Here are some rebuttal articles to get you started. You can also find your own.
Supporting Materials
