I’m not very familiar with social cognitive theory but the section that was referencing theoretical framework really caught my eye. Particularly the part about how self-efficacy is formed from four fundamental sources: past performances, vicarious experiences, social persuasions, and emotional arousal. As a psychology major this actually intrigued me the most, and I look forward to doing more research on that subject. One quote that really resonated with me was by Nora and Cabrera and it read “…students of color hold markedly distinct experiences compared to white students…” and I think if more social action were taken and acknowledged, the originally white-focused findings of self-efficacy would come into question. One thing that was not entirely clear for me was how the newer variables like social media and other technological influences have changed the original data taken from older research studies, I would be interested to see a more updated study be performed with considerations to intersectional influences.

What are 2-3 of the BIGGEST ideas expressed in the reading you selected (ch. 8, 11, 12, 13, 14, or 17)?
I chose chapter 14, which was on African American film, some of the biggest ideas expressed were overcoming stereotypes of African Americans in film, seeing African Americans in mainstream media in “normal” roles, and the struggle to get where they are today.
What might make them important for those trying to understand the African Americans?
I think media like tv and movies are a big influence on our U.S. culture and having accurate and modern perspectives from African Americans can help people understand that African American life is more than “hood stories” and “blaxploitation” films. Seeing the parts of film history that allowed for black face and terrible stereotypes to occur should embolden anyone to see that they are wrong and did nothing for the advancement of African Americans, it only pushed stereotypes upon them. By having directors like Spike Lee, Ryan Coogler, Jordan Peele, and Ava DuVernay they are able to portray African American life from a real perspective and do things like hire actors, casts, and staff to balance other aspects of the white washed Hollywood industry that has controlled the industry for too long.
What is one phrase or passage that resonated most for you? Why?
I love the quote from Spike Lee at the intro of the chapter
“I think it is very important that films make people look at what they’ve forgotten.”
Films are in a way a thing of permanence, so to be able to look back at all the good and bad things that happened over the course of film history and reflect on them should help us move forward in positive, growing ways. We should look at old films and see that they are often plagued with stereotypes, homophobia, and racism that were considered “ok” at the time, we know better and can do better now.
What is one action might you take to apply what you’ve read to your everyday life?
Just like some of the other chapters like literature, I actively seek out African American voices in my media like Harlem (prime series about modern NYC life), She’s gotta have it (Netflix series by Spike Lee based on the movie), Insecure( Issa Rae, slice of life, HBO ) to name just a few, check them out if you haven’t already!
One thing that was not entirely clear to me was….
Why do we still see stereotypes in media today? Like The dumb dad, the overbearing mom, the fat kid, the “autistic” person, the token minority friend, etc etc. There have to be other ways to give comedic relief/drama than to play to these stereotypes.
After reading about African American Film stereotypes in this chapter, I’d like to dig deeper into that idea.
I think there is a lot to learn about that topic and also to make sure the same things are not being done to other groups, people in current media.
