Klages writes, “The basic ideas of the Enlightenment are roughly the same as the basic ideas of humanism: There is a stable, coherent, knowable self. This self is conscious, rational, autonomous, and universal – no physical conditions or differences substantially affect how this self operates” (167). Klages writes, “Every belief system or ideology has its grand narratives, according to Lyotard. […] a story that is told to explain the belief systems that exist” (169). Klages writes, “Postmodernism, in rejecting grand narratives, favors ‘mini-narratives,’ stories that explain small practices, local events, rather than large-scale universal or global concepts. Postmodern ‘mini-narratives’ are always situational, provisional, contingent, and temporary, making no claim to universality, truth, reason, or stability” (169). That signified, according to Baudrillard, is social status, or a subject position within a variety of social codes or models” (169-70).
