Discussion 4. Quantitative and Qualitative Research Methods
Qualitative research is used with studies that cannot produce a simple yes or no, and is used, instead, to provide how answers. For example, how does polypharmacy affect the elderly population in Florida. Further, it includes obtaining information that uses unstructured data by the researcher, which can include different methods such as observing, one on one interviews, focus groups, surveys, participant-observation, recordings, documents, and case studies used in qualitative research. The information is mostly nonnumerical. Ethnography, grounded theory, analysis, and interpretative phenomenological analysis are examples of a variety of methods used in this type of research (Bilgin, 2017).
Further, when producing a research paper and using the qualitative method, certain steps need to be included to develop an organized flow, and to help organize yourself and your thoughts to decrease overwhelming yourself. First, selecting your topic and gathering your information is crucial for the end result. A helpful tip is that when choosing your topic, assure that the topic is clear and specific. For instance, choose a burning question that can be narrowed enough where information is manageable and obtained without it being too broad of a subject that will make it harder for the researcher (Bilgin, 2017). Then, do a literature review of the topic youve chosen and see what other peoples thoughts were about this literature. Next, you should determine whether this method is the correct method for your paper, or whether a different method would make more sense. Additionally, depending on your sample size, make sure that it is not large enough to where you are unable to narrow it down enough. And last, choose a methodology that can be either phenomenology, grounded theory, case study research, ethnography, or action research (Fordham, 2017).
Quantitative research is information obtained by gathering quantifiable data which is numerical and obtained through questionnaires to focus on the purpose of the study. As mentioned in qualitative research, quantitative research is also done in stages which include theory, hypothesis, research design, data collection, analysis, and conclusions. For example, How often does a patient end up in the hospital due to adverse effects of polypharmacy, is an example of quantitative research because it is information that can be collected by sending a patient a questionnaire after hospitalization and asking what the hospitalization was for. Further, unlike qualitative research, quantitative research can be used on a larger sample size and can include an entire population (Fordham, 2017).
As you can see, quantitative and qualitative research are both useful research methods when obtaining information for your topic; however, determining which one is best for you, depends on what you are trying to achieve (Bilgin, 2017).
