Purpose:
Trade publications are an important way public relations practitioners stay on top of best practices and developments in the field. Becoming familiar with them will allow you to find resources and ideas you can use on the job to develop effective solutions, prevent problems, and nurture deeper, mutually beneficial relationships between your organization and its key publics.
Skills:
This assignment will help you practice the following skills that are essential to your success in public relations:
Finding articles relevant to a specific topic in trade publications
Summarizing important points in the article
Connecting important points to core concepts and theories from the textbook
Identifying situations in the practice of public relations where these key points can be applied
Analyzing the validity and applicability of the article to the practice of public relations
Making recommendations for further research and application of information
Citing information properly
Task:
Using the Mansfield Library’s electronic database (watch the video above), locate a recent (within the last three years) article in a trade publication related to the topics in Chapters 9-12 of our textbook.
Read the article, and write a 2-3-page review that includes the following sections:
Summary: Identify the article’s key points and significant findings.
Relevance and Applicability: Explain why this article is relevant to the practice of public relations. That is, if you worked in PR, what could you extract from this article to do a better job? Identify situations where this information could be used and explain how PR practitioners could use this information.
Context: Compare and contrast this article to the textbook. How are the article and the textbook’s discussion of the topic similar or different?
Critical Evaluation: Explain why this article would matter to a PR practitioner. Give examples of the paper’s usefulness or identify what would make it more useful. For example, did it help clarify your understanding of the topics you’ve read in the text? Was there anything omitted that would be useful? Why are the issues and themes important?
Hints for Success:
Carefully examine the example paper with commentary (below) to see how I want your paper formatted and the level of detail I’m looking for. Your paper should include a title page, headings (use the bold sections identified under Task so it’s clear to me what section you’re addressing) and a reference list, all in APA format.
Use the rubric under Grading criteria as an outline. This will ensure you’ve addressed all the points I’m looking for in each section.
When you cite a source in the body of your paper, you need to include an entry on your reference list and vice versa. Failure to do so is incremental plagiarism and will result in a zero.
