Purpose: To connect the work of Jesus to the ongoing work of the church in John’s theology.
In John 20:19–23 the resurrected Jesus appears to a group of his disciples for the first time. He breathes the Holy Spirit into them (recalling the creation story in Genesis 1 when God breathes life into humans beings) and gives them their mission. “As the Father has sent me,” he instructs them, “I am sending you” (20:21).
Post: Starting with these words in John 20:21, describe John’s understanding of the mission of the church. To do this, you will need to first describe why Jesus was sent by the Father. Use the opening “hymn” in John 1:1–18 along with two other specific passages from the gospel to define Jesus’s mission. Then, explain what it would mean for Jesus to pass this mission along to his disciples. What is he sending them to do?
Finally, use what you have learned about the mission of the Christian community in John’s gospel to explore a present-day understanding of the church. If you were asked to develop a “mission statement” for a present-day church, what would it be? How has John 20:21 influenced your understanding of the church’s mission?

Response: Over the next couple of days, read through the posts from the classmates in your discussion group for this week. Choose one post and offer a substantive response. A substantive response should explain what you appreciate about the post and how it enhances your understanding of the topic. It should also expand on the initial post by citing additional evidence from 1 Thessalonians or Philemon. The expansion might come in one of the following forms:
Complete Affirmation. (“I completely agree, and I think the following passages further support what you are saying . . . .”)
Affirmation with a Tweak. (“I’m on board with your general point, but I think, based on the following passages, I might say it in a slightly different way . . . .”)
Polite Disagreement. (“I understand how you arrived at your conclusion, but you have you considered ___________? This evidence leads me to a different conclusion. . . .”
Your response to a classmate’s post should be submitted by 11:59 pm CST on Monday.
