Purpose
The purpose of this assignment is to determine if you can apply your knowledge of juvenile law and Florida’s juvenile justice system in a speech for group of circuit and county court judges. Not all judges appointed or elected are familiar with the state’s juvenile justice system nor the federal office of juvenile justice. Your future criminal justice profession might require you to communicate orally or in writing your knowledge of our juvenile system.
Scenario
You are a juvenile probation officer with the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice. Your supervisor has asked you to write a speech for her. She has been invited to speak to the Ninth Judicial Circuit Court judges at their monthly meeting. County judges will also be present. She was asked to provide an overview of the juvenile justice system in Florida. Some of the judges are new to the judiciary and would like to understand more about the juvenile offender processes. This is especially important for 3 new judges who will be assigned to handle juvenile cases. Here is a current picture of all of the judges in the Ninth Judicial Circuit Court https://ninthcircuit.org/judges who will be present for your supervisor’s presentation.
Assignment
Your task is to write a 10-minute speech giving the judges a broad overview of the Florida DJJ and its major functions. The DJJ website is in this module. You will need the website to write your speech. You will not deliver the speech because your supervisor is doing that. Oh, and your supervisor is a stickler for proper grammar, punctuation, and spelling!
A 10-minute speech contains approximately 1,500 words. One page typically contains 250 words if double spaced. Your written speech should be 5-6 pages. Please keep in mind that your supervisor will read the speech you have written, so be sure to start the speech with your supervisor’s introduction. Example: Good morning. My name is ___________, and I am here today to talk to you about Florida’s juvenile justice system.

The federal Office of Juvenile Justice https://ojjdp.ojp.gov/ website might also help you with your speech on juvenile justice, but remember that your speech focuses on Florida’s system.
