PURPOSE: The purpose of this assignment is for you to research an issue and use critical thinking and apply adaptive leadership as a framework for exploring the issues.
ASSIGNMENT GUIDELINES: For this assignment, you will explore adaptive leadership in action! The goal is for you to document adaptive challenges and use images to show different concepts related to Adaptive Leadership. Think of current issues or crises we are experiencing now. “Adaptive challenges are usually valued laden and stir up people’s emotions.” (Northouse, 2022, p. 291). Whatever challenge you choose, focus on how it affects your community (not at a global level). Think about your campus, community, or state.
Gender/Race/LGBTQ+ Inequity
Healthcare
Employment and unemployment trends
Homelessness
Food deserts
Issues on YOUR campus
The list continues…NOTE: Try to avoid COVID- this has been done many times and we are faced with many more challenges.
PHOTO ELICITATION RESEARCH: Because imagery is a powerful tool for storytelling, you will use images (REAL and published-i.e. Google images) to document, explain, and establish the adaptive challenge. We can use imagery like this as a means of data collection for qualitative research, to better understand how an issue affects individuals and a community.
PROJECT INSTRUCTIONS: The final product of this assignment is to create a PP or Prezi presentation that outlines the issue, uses images as a way to collect data, and apply the adaptive leadership framework. This is a rough outline of how you might organize the final product:
STEP 1. Choose a local, community, adaptive challenge issue you are passionate about. Research the issue using credible sources.
The first few (1-2) slides of your presentation should be explaining the issue.
STEP 2: Collect images of the issue to show what is happening. Who is affected? What are the causes/outcomes of the issue? The idea behind photo-elicitation is that you put the camera in the hands of those affected. For example, you might have a homeless person document their life or someone who is disabled. Here you are encouraged to take your photos and find some online.
At least 2-3 slides that illustrate the issue with descriptions
STEP 3: Apply the six adaptive leadership behaviors and the work to be done. Use figure 11.1 in the reading.
However many slides you need to convert the model.
NOTE: The final slideshow and/or presentation might contain around 10-12 slides. This is only a guide. You are NOT docked if you go over.
