Purpose: Students are able to apply foundational theory, sometimes decades old, to the modern human developmental path through exploring the deeper psychological meaning of developmental milestones.
Theory is at the foundation of a solid, empirical psychological discipline. As we move farther and farther from the birthplace of psychology, many early theories will begin to feel the strain of the passing of time and with it, the change of societal norms and culture. The “aging” of these theories, however, do not make them less relevant or applicable to the human experience. Such is the case with Erickson’s Psychosocial Theory of Development. The early and middle adulthood stages in particular, garner some pushback due to the language used to designate the primary developmental tasks.
Write: Begin by writing 75-125 words that discuss and describe Erikson’s Psychosocial Stage for Early Adulthood, Intimacy v. Isolation, and the stage for Middle Adulthood, Generativity v. Stagnation. Be sure to be sure to address the language used to describe these stages and any thoughts or feelings they may bring up from the viewpoint of a person in (choose whichever stage you’re actually in) either Early Adulthood or Middle Adulthood.
Continue your reflection by addressing the following questions:
What deeper developmental intent was being communicated when Erickson identified Intimacy as the primary developmental task in Early Adulthood that would apply to all humans, regardless of culture, generation, or societal practice?
What deeper developmental intent was being communicated when Erickson identified Generativity as the primary developmental task in Middle Adulthood that would apply to all humans, regardless of culture, generation, or societal practice?
Given what you know about the developmental tasks for Early Adulthood and Middle Adulthood, do you think that Intimacy must be achieved in order to then achieve Generativity? Why or why not.
Why do you think these stages seem to have “aged” more than Erickson’s other stages of psychosocial development?
Based on Erickson’s Theory of Psychosocial Development, draw conclusions about aging theories as a whole and what, if anything, they may be able to continue to contribute to the discipline of Psychology.
