In this paper you will be comparing the original “Sacrificial Dance (The Chosen One)” from The Rite of Spring (as presented in the reconstruction of Vaslav Nijinksy’s choreography performed by the Joffrey Ballet) to a more contemporary choreographic rendering of this section of the work.  The comparison should be made through very detailed descriiption of the choreography and may also address the contemporary choreographer’s treatment of the music and themes introduced in the 1913 work.  You will have five different versions* of this section to choose from, all utilizing the same portion of Stravinsky’s score.  Though the focus of your investigation will be on this re-invented version of the work, it will also be necessary to reference and describe the original choreography for The Rite of Spring in your comparison.  You should also be able to provide correct contextual information for the more contemporary “version” of this dance.
Your paper should do the following:
* Provide an introduction that briefly addresses the original version of The Rite of Spring and introduces the contemporary version of the dance you have chosen to describe.
* Provide background information on the contemporary version of the “Sacrificial Dance” you have chosen (this could be included in the introductory paragraph).
Including: date of premiere, venue, and any relevant information on artistic collaborators
* Provide an in-depth descriiption of the contemporary version of the “Sacrificial Dance” you have chosen.
Including: movement vocabulary (focusing on the movement qualities, energy, and force, as well the choreographer’s use of time and space) AND theatrical elements.  You should be employing specific vocabulary for movement descriiption learned in class, when appropriate, as well as developing a personal vocabulary for descriiption.
* Provide comparison between your chosen choreographer’s vision for his/her contemporary take on “The Sacrificial Dance” and the original choreography by Nijinsky.
* Correctly cite the videos examined – both the reconstruction by the Joffrey Ballet and the more contemporary version of “The Sacrificial Dance” by your chosen choreographer – and any other sources used for contextualization of the newer work.
