From your research, you know that this topic has been a focus of investigation for over 30 years and is one the American Medical Association takes very seriously. However, the time has shown that disruptive behaviors do not only apply to physicians but that they also apply to all healthcare professionals. Many healthcare professionals struggle to control their behavior and become disruptive not only to peers but, unfortunately, also to patients. The literature widely documents behaviors such as bullying, harassment, theft, fraud, sabotage, etc., which Holmes and Olson (2016) point out results in lower morale, staff turnover, and undermining a culture of safety to patient care. You are on target regarding the code of conduct. Establishing a code of conduct has been a key recommendation in the research. Still, staff struggle with feelings of disloyalty and remain reluctant to report the behavior for fear of retaliation. You’ll find that we focus a lot on whistleblowers in this class. I’m sharing a historical article widely cited to this day on the ongoing concerns for whistleblowers in healthcare. I’ve also included an article that communicates the AMA’s definition for disruptive behavior and gives common situations. Glean over the research shared when time permits.
