Based on what you have learned in this class, come up with a solid policy that you think should be implemented into the Criminal Justice system. Base this recommendation off of everything you have learned (e.g., crime, why people commit crimes, victimization, police, courts, corrections ,CJ policy, etc..). Your policy should be directed at either controlling crime or changing police, courts or corrections. Be sure to use several resources to back up your justification for the policy. Policy on gun reform
Since the turn of the century, as a U.S. citizen, a weapon of any kind could be obtained legally or illegally. Currently, gun violence in America is at an all time high and exacts an enormous toll on American society. To mitigate this, a policy needs to be created to better control crimes. The Second Amendment simply states a well-regulated militia, is necessary for the security of a free state, and people have the rights to keep and bear arms (Constitution Annotated, n.d.). When I interpret the Second Amendment, I have a different take on it. We are no longer living in colonial times where normal citizens will need to be armed and ready to fend off Great Britain. In fact, as a nation we are looked to as a global power with the most powerful and establish military spanning worldwide. With recent events, we are not living up to our title, instead imploding upon ourselves with unnecessary acts of violence. The new policy being proposed is to simply limit certain guns afforded to the people. As a normal civilian, we have no need for an AR-15 or any semi-automatic platforms. These weapons should only be made available to law enforcement and our military forces. If a citizen wishes to own one, then we need to adopt the military system of storing individual’s weapons in an armory. Resident living on a military installation are required to keep their weapons at the base armory. In the civilian sector, these armories could be centrally located at the police station where they are kept locked up and when need they could be checked out. There are no perfect solutions to the current problem, but this could be a policy that save us from living in fear. Currently, 41,000 Americans die from gun violence every year, this is an average of more than 110 people per day (Giffords, 2022). By the creation of this policy, the 41,000 souls could possibly be saved. Our founding Fathers established the Amendments to ensure we are all afforded certain rights as citizens, but as a nation we need to change and adapt to succeed. In wars, we no longer line up in formation and march towards our enemies, why shouldn’t we look at gun reform as a new tactic that is advantageous to the mass. At the end of the day, what is law is not always effective and what is effective is not always law (Burke, 2019).
