3,000–3,500 word paper on a focused aspect of Smart Cities. There will be a dual emphasis throughout: the future development of the technology and the wider social impact of the technology.
There’s certainly no fixed recipe suggested for the report/paper and you are encouraged to be inventive/creative and use your imagination. However, you must – in one form or another – cover these essential ‘ingredients’:
– What your chosen technology can do now and will do in the future
– What the wider social, ethical, political, legal, environmental, economic,
demographic, etc. impacts are and will be.
– The integration of your chosen technology with other key emerging and future
technologies and – again – the wider impact on the larger scale.
– Firm conclusions drawn as to where, in your opinion, it’s probably all heading. (Not a ‘wish list’ of what you think ‘should happen’.
The emphasis should be on the future – how existing concepts will develop – and the wider implications.
These predictions will involve the synthesis of various sources and opinions (very likely differing opinions) and may reasonably include appropriate speculation – hopefully justified but probably unproven.
Grading for this paper will be based on this futurology aspect of your work.
This should extend beyond the obvious advantages of the new technology to include the potential disadvantages and dangers as well. Try to consider all the technology’s potential but think about all the drawbacks too. These might be not be just technical in nature but social, environmental, ethical, political, legal, etc. and possibly a lot more besides.
The report must be strictly between 3,000 and 3,500 words (main text: excluding tables, captions, references, etc.) and must be formatted according to the IEEE two-column template available from (https://www.ieee.org/conferences/publishing/templates.html) with no more than an average of one figure/table per page.
The emphasis is on how the technology will evolve and what it will do – not background detail.
No assignment specification. title page or other extra material is necessary – just ‘the paper.
