Project Description: Design a mini-exhibition around the selected artwork (David Alfaro Siqueiros. Collective Suicide 1936). Select 3 works that might hang in a gallery with the work. These works must be by other artists associated with Modernism. (For example, if you chose to arrange an exhibition around work by Frida Kahlo, the other 3 works must be by different Modern artists.) Come up with an exhibition concept that unites the selected works. It could be an exhibition about a style/movement (for example, Surrealism) or about a broader theme or subject (for example, an exhibition of self-portraits, or Mexican artists, or female painters), but it must in some way address why all these works are considered Modern.
Project Requirements:
~4 pages (including all components listed below) (Times New Roman with size-12 font, double-spaced, and default margins)
You must include:
An introductory wall text describing your exhibition’s subject and/or theme and why this movement/subject is associated with Modernism. Think about an introductory text that orients the visitor as to the historical context, or the artists’ biographies, or larger formal or conceptual trends and themes, or common subjects, etc. This text binds the various works chosen into a single conversation.
This text should be 1-2 pages in length (Times New Roman with size-12 font, double-spaced, and default margins).
Incorporate facts/evidence from 1 scholarly sources into your summary (properly cited using Chicago-style footnotes AND bibliography).
You must address why all these works are associated with Modernism. (This will require you to define what you think “Modernism” means.)
You must convincingly argue why all these works should be shown together. What is the connecting thread/subject/theme/style? What am I as a visitor getting out of this collection of works?
A successful wall text will include a thesis statement.
One wall text for the central artwork (David Alfaro Siqueiros. Collective Suicide 1936). This text should offer a formal, iconographic and contextual analysis of the work and offer some deeper reflection on how it fits into the exhibition’s theme/subject. Imagine a visitor who has never heard of this artist approaches the artwork. What would you want to tell them so that they understand why it is in the exhibition?
This text should be 2 pages in length (Times New Roman with size-12 font, double-spaced, and default margins).
Provide all identifying information for the artwork. (Artist, Title, Date, Medium, Movement)
Incorporate facts/evidence from 3 scholarly sources into your summary (properly cited using Chicago-style footnotes AND bibliography). These sources should be different than those cited in the wall text.
Include one short quotation (fewer than three lines) from the artist. Cite it (this can be one of the three sources)!
Be sure to address the artwork’s historical context, its subject and its formal features.
A successful wall text will include a thesis statement that effectively argues why you have included this work in this Modernist exhibition.
A list of the 3 works you would like to include in your exhibition alongside your central artwork. (This is called an exhibition check-list by curators.)
Provide all identifying information for the artworks (Artist, Title, Date, Medium, Movement, Museum or collection where it is currently located, if you can find it)
Be sure to include images.
