Processes, Periods, and Theories of Development
This week you have learned about developmental processes, periods of development, and developmental theories. Apply the information from this week to the scenario below by responding to the statements and questions listed after.
Janet is a single mother with concerns about the development of her 5-year-old son, Evan. Janet explains that Evan does not yet know how to identify his letters, is quite small for his age, and has difficulty interacting with peers. Evan’s doctor has expressed concern over his physical development, lack of appropriate verbal skills, and ability to follow directions. Janet claims that she lives in poverty and did not receive adequate prenatal care. She currently rents an apartment in a neighborhood that is known to be unsafe and, at times, violent. Evan will be starting kindergarten in the fall and does not have many opportunities to go outside to play and meet other children because of where he lives.
Please respond to the following:
Choose one of the three developmental processes, and explain the changes that have happened with Evan in that developmental process.
Explain which period of development Evan is in and what changes would be expected of a child in this particular period.
Choose two of the five developmental theorists discussed in the book and use them to explain how they would view Evan’s development.
What are some examples of nature versus nurture from the case study?
