Project Description
This is a hybrid assignment involving two parts. In the first part, you will be invited to attend an optional webinar focused on the meaning of the terms ‘leadership’ and ‘philosophy,’ how leadership philosophies manifest into action, and the impact that leadership philosophy has on teams, tasks, and organizations. If you are unable to attend the webinar, read one of the following case studies to ground your understanding:

Next, you’ll work independently to formulate an authentic leadership philosophy that outlines your approach to leading yourself, others, tasks and thinking, and a balanced life.
A leadership philosophy emerges after a period of introspection and self-reflection. In order to complete this essay, you will need to reflect upon your own values, beliefs, motivations, emotions, strengths, weaknesses and experiences. We recommend reflecting on questions such as:
? What significant events have shaped you?
? What are your beliefs about people and outlook on life?
? What core values describe and guide who you are as a leader?
? What traits, characteristics, skills, styles, motivation, goals, etc. do you bring to leadership that makes you effective?
? What is important for your team to be effective?
? What is your preferred communication style?
? What are your expectations for yourself and others?
? What is your role in developing others?
? How do you want to be remembered?
Assignment Requirements
The essay should be around 3 pages long, excluding any appendices (see below). You may use any approach to frame your leadership philosophy. One common approach, which is recommended but not mandatory, is to consider four areas or maxims: a) how you lead yourself (i.e. your values and motivations), b) how you lead others, c) how you lead thinking (i.e. tasks, strategy, and performance), and d) how you lead a balanced life.
Your report should be arranged in two parts as follows:
1. Emerging from the webinar or your reading of the case(s), a brief (one or two paragraphs) discussion of what leadership philosophy means and its importance to 21st century workplaces.
2. An articulation of your own leadership philosophy, supported by practical examples and personal reflections on your background, beliefs and experiences In addition, you may, if you wish, include an appendix of supporting evidence (e.g. statements from supervisees, documents outlining leadership courses taken, etc.)
Tips & Resources
? A leadership philosophy is written from a personal perspective, so be sure to write in the first person.
? The format of the written document is your choice (e.g., single space, double space, prose style, bullet points, etc.).
? If you referred to external sources, you must include a final page of references.
