Before doing the lab make sure to read the Spreadsheet tutorial in this week’s material. Also, watch the video before proceeding.
In this lab, you will create a spreadsheet. Spreadsheets are wonderful things that are designed to make our lives easier! They allow us to organize our information into columns (vertical and lettered) and rows (horizontal and numbered). A cell is the intersection of a Column and Row and gets named after them. For example, the cell in the top left corner of a spreadsheet is cell A1 which is the intersection of column A and row 1. The primary purpose of a spreadsheet is to do mathematical calculations for us but before they can do that we have to set up those formulas. As you get started on this lab you will organize and research some information then you will create some formulas to do calculations. When you get to the formulas make sure you are using cell references in the formulas rather than the number that is in the cell. By doing this you will be able to change the value in a cell and still have the formula remain correct! Formulas should always reference the cell rather than the value in a cell!
This spreadsheet will store information about a variety of foods and their nutritional values. You will use formulas to perform calculations based on the nutritional values.
Instructions
Resources
Create a new spreadsheet in Google Drive.
Setup the spreadsheet with the types of data we are collecting in columns and the items we are collecting data about in rows like the screenshot. You can click on the image to enlarge it. Make sure to set up for each of the data fields in the image, don’t worry about the data just yet.
Collect nutritional information on your favorite foods, don’t use the foods I listed. Collect at least the following:
3 Meal foods like a hamburger, steak, lasagna, etc
3 Desserts
3 Drinks
3 Fruits
3 Vegetables
Nutritional value for processed foods can be found on the manufacturer website. For natural whole foods, you can type the food into Google and it will return the nutritional data. For example, I typed “apple nutrition” and got the results shown.
Fill out the data up to the column Calories. The last 5 columns on the spreadsheet will have formulas that we will create soon.
To calculate the “Carb per unit” for your first item (on row 2) you would write a formula in the cell J2. A formula always starts with an “=” and to calculate the carb per unit you would need to divide the carb (cell f2) by the portion size (d2). The formula would be =f2/d2
Continue to fill out and create the rest of the formulas for columns J through N. Note that these all MUST be formulas and that the formulas MUST use cell references. If you have not already read the Spreadsheet Tutorial and watched the video for Beginning Spreadsheets do that now.
Note: For the formulas in column N you will need to ensure you have one of your food items be the nutritional value of lettuce because you will have to reference this in the formula.
Locate your spreadsheet in your CIS101/Labs folder and share this spreadsheet with me [email protected] then submit the link to the shared file on the assignment on the course website.
