Synthesis of Findings
This may be the more challenging aspect of the paper. Make sure that you read: The Systematic Review: An Overview: Synthesizing research evidence to inform nursing practice. This is where you put together an answer for your question. Based on your extraction, you will find what the important elements are, what the important outcomes are and you will weigh the evidence and your confidence in the evidence based on your appraisal. Once you have described your synthesized findings, you will be ready to state the implications. For PICo (meaning questions) you take the categories/themes from the existing qualitative studies (avoid reinterpreting the data) and categorize them. For PICO (effectiveness questions), this section should include a brief description of how the data was synthesized – either as a meta-analysis or as a narrative summary. If the authors performed a meta-analysis include what the synthesized result was (e.g. An OR=___ with a confidence interval of X-_XX (the identified range) or a mean difference of X and confidence interval of XX–XX. *Remember you did not actually engage in a systematic review. Your search of data bases were very limited, you only appraised three studies etc., so do not refer to your paper as a “Systematic Review” per se.
Implications of Evidence
Implications for Advanced Nursing Practice (make this 3/4 page long)
Based on your weighing of quality and magnitude of the evidence you found, describe the implications for APN practice. Be careful to stay within the scope of your question, the limits of the research and the limitations of the number of studies and their quality. This is your bottom line! The reader should be able to go back to your findings (and for qualitative papers-categories/themes) and identify the “link” between the findings and implications for APN practice. This should be written in paragraph format and not just bulleted.
